AIR ITAM DAM

It's a pity many local visitors to Penang missed out the AIR ITAM DAM, because of limited time allocated to them by tour operators.

The Air Itam Dam is located in the middle of the forested hills and it is just uphill from the Kek Lok Si Temple and the Air Itam Dam overlooks the Air Itam valley . It takes about 45 mins by foot to reach the Dam from the Kek Lok Si Temple.

The Air Itam Dam was constructed by the city council of Georgetown , Penang on the year 1958 and it is open on the year 1962 .

The Air Itam reservoir has a capacity of 550 million gallons of water. The height of this Dam is 170 feet and the length of this Dam is 800 feet while the volume of fill is 800 , 000 cubic yards and the volume of concrete is 30 , 000 cubic yards . It cost around RM 15 million to build.  .

The cool temperature and un-spoilt surrounding areas has attracted many hikers and joggers here.

Occasionally many  hiking competitions are held here by various schools and private organizations. A pleasant walk or jogging along the path around the Dam takes about 30 mins or so. There is also a children's playground at the Dam. The resting spot of the Dam offers a good view of the city below

The path on the left after the Dam leads to the town  of Balik Pulau and a little bit further up the surrounding path can lead to Penang Hill.

Note: These treacherous and dangerous paths are used by hill farmers to transport their vegetables.
